一、比较结构的关联词（二）

11、 nothing but = nothing else than = nothing less than

不是别的...正是...;完全是；无异于

Genius is nothing else but labor and diligence.
译文：天才不过是劳动加勤奋而已

12、much less = still less 更不，更无

I could not agree to ,much less participate in such proceedings
译文：我不能同意这种行为，更谈不上参与这些行动了。

much less ,still less 引导的词组或者从句，表示一种追加的否定，所以这两个词组只能用于否定剧中。需要指出的是，to say nothing of ,not to speak of ,not to mention ,let alone 这四个词组的意思也是“更不用说”，表示一个追补的说法，但他们与much less和still less 有所不同这些词可以前一句的意思而定。前一句是肯定意义，则追加的就是肯定意义，如果前一句是否定意义，则追加的就是否定意义,如:

In old China ,there was hardly any machine-building industry ,to say nothing of electronic industry.
译文：在古老的中国，那里没有机械制造业，也没有电子工业。

13、anything but 根本不；all but 几乎，差一点，除...以外都是；but for 要不是；but that +从句：若不是...

Alone in a deserted house,he was so busy with his research work that he felt anything but lonely.
译文：虽然独自一个人待在这所清冷的房子里，但他埋头于研究工作，一直也没有感到孤独。

It was all but impossible to climb back into theboat.
译文：再回到小船上几乎已经不可能了。

all but 表示 几乎不 all...but...表示 除了...以外都

14、not nearly (=far from ,much less than )相差很远，远远少于

The food supply will not increase nearly enough to match the growth of popuation ,which means that we are heading into a crisis in the matter of producing and marketing food.

15、cannot ... too 再...也不过分

We cannot be too faithful to our duties.
译文：我们必须尽忠职守。

16、as well as (= in addition)也，和...一样，除...之外，不但...而且

The socialist Revolution requires a change of the superstructure as well as a change of the economic basis.
译文：社会主义革命不仅要求改变经济基础，也要求改变上层建筑。

17、more than +从句（谓语中含can 或 could）；实在不能

Some math problems in that book are more than i can work out.
译文：那本书上的一些数学难题我实在接不来

18、...only to + 动词 ;...结果却...

They have to pay for experience seats at the theatre ,the cinema or the opera,only to discover,perhaps,that the show is disappointing.
译文：他们花钱去剧院、电影院或者歌剧院买价格昂股的票，结果却发现演出令人失望。
